A leaky gut and constant fatigue

If you have not been diagnosed with CF, ME or fibromyalgia, but still feel constantly heavy with extremely low energy, I feel ya!

Fatigue. Exhaustion. Lethargy. Wiped. Tired AF.

However you want to describe this horrible condition, the fact is that most of us feel it to some degree (full disclosure: since I haven’t been totally compliant with my dietary regimen the last couple of months, I’m taking naps more than I’d care to admit; AND it doesn’t help that I have Dry Eye).

For many years, I struggled with peeling myself out of bed (even after averaging 7-10 hrs of sleep) and barely getting through the day without feeling physically exhausted. Even sitting down was a constant battle to stay awake. Grocery shopping or taking a short hike around the block often left me depleted.

Our gut friends are constantly working with our cells, absorbing nutrients from the foods we eat, creating vitamins, proteins and all that jazz. Remember the organelle in charge of producing ATP (energy) called mitochondrion from biology class?

It turns out that these bean-looking structures floating around inside our cells are what power our every move. When our mitochondrial functions are compromised is when we feel all kinds of tired.

Additionally, when you have a leaky gut (holes in your gut lining) or gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria), most of the energy being produced by your mitochondria is used up by your immune system to keep inflammation at bay. And if you have chronic inflammation, your immune system goes on overdrive and there goes your energy! Dr. Steven Gundry explains the whole science behind this mechanism in his book The Energy Paradox by Dr. Steven Gundry.

To put simply:

A diversely balanced gut microbiome = mitochondrial efficiency = ENERGY 💙
