Let’s talk shit

It’s practically impossible to discuss gut health without the mention of your poo. I mean, it’s where bacteria for research comes from after all.

Your poo—from how it looks to when and how often you have it—may tell you the state of your gut. It’s important to pay attention to your number two, especially if you are experiencing digestive issues or any inflammatory conditions.

Check out the graphic to the right. It’s a diagnostic medical tool developed at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in England to assess the efficacy of treatments for bowel conditions like IBS. As you can see, you want to strive for types 3 or 4 and having them be more or less like a tootsie roll :)

I remember growing up and well into adulthood, I averaged two to five bowel movements a day, which I thought was normal. The quality often ranged from types 4-7, depending on what I ate. Once I learned how to get my gut in check, my stool normalized to types 3 and 4 at once or twice a day.

Do you observe your BM’s? Do you notice a correlation between the food/drink/medication that you ingest, the texture of your stool and BM frequency?
