This one mindset could be compromising your growth

When I first started changing how and what I ate, I remember getting withdrawals and feeling hangry all the time, despite getting enough calories.

When I embarked on a new fitness regimen last month, I struggled with keeping up because I was out of shape.

Last year when my business coach challenged me to brush my teeth with my left hand for sixty-seven days, I brushed away, despite getting toothpaste all over my face.

In each of the scenario above, I stomped, pouted and thought to myself, "This is so hard. I don't think I can keep this up." It WAS hard and I kept up because I adjusted my thinking.

You see, our brains are biologically wired to be as efficient (AKA lazy) as possible.

When you think about the gazillion things you do on autopilot, do you remember how hard it was learning them in the beginning? Yet today, those things have become second nature that you don't even have to think about it.

When it comes to learning something new or developing a new habit, your brain will always resist and pull you back into your comfort zone. Here are three steps to help counter that:

1. Acknowledge and accept your brain's natural resistance to new information

2. Ensure that the new thing is backed by a strong desire, trust and belief

3. Reframe the thought, "This is hard" to "It's not hard, it's new.”

I remember with the toothbrush challenge, my business coach always encouraged us throughout the program with the statement, "It's not hard, it's new." It's such a simple yet powerful way of reprogramming your brain so that you take consistent action and stay on track of your goals.

Think about the last time your brain said, "Uh uh, this is hard" when trying something new. How did you manage to stay on track?
