Trust and release
Do you remember in the not so distant past when many of us were put to the ultimate test with #stayathome and #workfromhome mandates?
If you weren't watching that sourdough starter "boil" or binging on TikTok videos, you were probably gardening indoor or out.
I consume a lot of avocados (great gut-brain-loving source for good fat, fiber and vitamins) and I compost the skin and seed. I've never grown an avocado plant from scratch so one day I took the seed, poked into it three toothpicks in a Mercedes-Benz pattern and placed it in a water-filled cup.
I refilled and changed the water diligently for days, as needed. A few weeks go by with no growth. A couple of months in and still nada. I almost tossed the thing into my compost bin.
Then in month three, a crack on the bottom of the seed revealed the tip of a tiny root.
From that day forward, the growth was seemingly exponential. She had finally arrived.
Experienced seed-rooters-in-a-cup are probably aware of this slow phenomenon, but for a novice like myself, I needed to learn to trust the process. My avo plant is now almost six feet tall.
Here's the dictionary definition of trust:
1. firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.
2. acceptance of the truth of a statement without evidence or investigation.
When you have trust in a person, place or thing, you have belief in them—a solid, unwavering belief.
I especially love the the second part of the definition: acceptance...without evidence.
Not seeing growth from the avocado seed for months drove me to nearly dumping it. It taught me patience and more importantly, the skill of holding on to the belief and trust that it WILL grow, even without evidence.
Patience really is a virtue and behind it is the power of belief!
