Managing your sweet tooth is the sweet spot to gut healing
I used to have the worse sweet tooth ever. Even to this day, when I don’t keep my refined sugar cravings at bay, I (and my gut friends) suffer big time.
The not-so-friendly bacteria living in your gut are always waiting to be fed, just like the good ones. When you consume high amounts of refined sugar (table sugar, HFCS, artificial sweeteners, etc.) and refined carbs (donuts, pizza, pasta, etc.), you are feeding these bad gut bugs. When they get used to this mouth-watering diet, guess what happens? YOU start to crave more of them too!
These bad guys have been known to produce fats, toxins and other by-products that are linked to inflammation, obesity, diabetes and a whole slew of chronic conditions that leave you, well, literally sick and tired.
They all work on your behalf
Remember that all these critters are talking to and working with your brain cells and if you have the bad guys doing most of or all the work, guess what also happens? You start to forget where you put those car keys, develop a constant need to stay in bed all day, get headaches, or snap at your hubby for not taking the trash out (whether he deserved the snap is another post for another day).
So what is the one thing that you can do right now to start the process of healing your gut? STARVE the bad bacteria! Not by shopping for probiotics or even eating more greens, but by reducing or better yet, eliminating, highly processed and refined foods from your daily diet.
This does not mean, however, that you cannot ever indulge in sweets. You absolutely can and there are many healthy versions of your favorite desserts out there. The key thing to understand here is that when your GM is in a compromised state, you need to take the necessary steps to clear out the junk in the beginning. Once you’re in the clear, then you can have your cake again, in moderation.
A fascinating thing that happens when you feed your gut friends and not the gut baddies is that you actually start to crave the good stuff: greens and whole foods.
