Brain and gut chatter
Your brain and your gut converse all the time.
They’re like besties that never run out of things to say to each other. The science world even calls the gut our “second brain” because so much information gets processed through our GM and transmitted to the brain and vice versa.
You know that gut feeling or butterflies we get in certain situations? Or when you’re stressed and you feel it in your tummy? It’s because our head brain and gut brain are physically (via the vagus nerve) and chemically (via neurotransmitters) connected.
Studies and data even show that the trillions of microbes in your gut are major influencers in the development of mental disorders like depression and autism. In fact, did you know that although serotonin (the happy hormone) is produced in the brain and gut, the majority of it—a whopping 95%—is produced in the gut?!
That literally means if you’re sad, it’s likely that your gut ain’t happy either.
So the next time you get the blues or have a hard time shaking out of a funk, think about your GM—have you been neglecting it? Here’s what that can look like:
You’ve been indulging in too many refined sweets (donuts, chocolate, candy, twinkies, etc.) and not consuming enough fiber from whole foods (leafy greens, cruciferous and root veggies)
You’re stressed all the time and not eating the right way (by scarfing down your food fast without properly chewing)
You’re not getting enough zzz’s
If you Google any wellness site, these three basic items will appear as factors contributing to a poor health condition. It’s because they wage a war against your GM and ultimately leads to weight gain, inflammation, brain fog, fatigue, etc.
