3 things you need to know about your gut

Did you know that we have two brains?

There’s our head brain and our gut “brain” (biologically known as our enteric nervous system that contains more than a hundred million nerve cells in and around our GI tract). They are like besties who never run out of things to say! Both brains maintain and control how you feel physically and emotionally.

The brain and gut are connected in three ways:

1. The vagus nerve. This nerve axis extends from the brain stem, branches out to your visceral organs, and continues down to your intestines. It plays a major role in our digestion, mental health and wellbeing, how hungry we feel and stress regulation.

2. The immune system. Up to 80% of our immune system happens in the gut. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is an inflammatory toxin made by certain bacteria, which cause inflammation. Too much of it passes from the gut into the blood.

3. Neurotransmitters. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that controls our mood. A whopping 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut! Additionally, gut microbes produce another neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which controls feelings of fear and anxiety.

So if you want to eradicate brain fog and feel good at the same time, start managing your gut.

Do you notice a lag in your mental state whenever you experience gut issues?
