How to travel and stay healthy

I recently got back from a two-week stay in upstate NY. I had such a great time attending a friend's wedding, visiting loved ones and being fully immersed in a climate of rain, sunshine and cool temps :)

Despite thoroughly enjoying every moment, I also fell off my diet game. At home, generally practice an 80/20 rule when it comes to eating: 80% of the time, I eat well and 20% I indulge in whatever my heart desires. In the last couple of weeks, the ratio was more 50/50 and I am now experiencing the unpleasant consequences!

Aside from the usual exhaustion associated with jet lag, my body is also fighting for its last circadian rhythm by telling me it's time to eat or sleep at "odd" times of the day.

When you combine those biological conditions with the ramifications of an unhealthy diet, the symptoms of fatigue feel amplified 😖.

As I allow time and my body to process the jet lag, I want to share a few things that kept me from completely veering off to a 30/70 (or worse) practice:

1. Have a non-negotiable's list. Decide ahead of time what you will and will not consume based on your particular condition. For example, consuming multiple servings of grains in one day leads to headaches for me so I make sure to space them out. Additionally, my body loves greens so I make sure that I have at least one serving of it throughout the day (in the form of a green smoothie or a big salad).

2. Consider a trade-off. For each indulgence, can you also throw in a 10-minute walk around the block? When I ate what I wanted, I also kept my workouts going, even if they weren't perfect. To me, it was about consistency—even when on vacation.

3. Release the guilt. In the past, I would beat myself up for not staying on track. It was easy for me to slip into an all-or-nothing mentality and I realized that going on vacation did not have to mean abandoning my goals completely.

Whether or not you give yourself permission to jump off the health wagon when traveling, it's always important to manage your mind and operate on love and kindness.

You have goals AND you're also human :)

Does this resonate with you and how do you navigate through the challenges that come up when you're out of your element?
